I think our society really does not value the very vital services of women whose children have left the home but still have no full time employment. These are the women who visit the parish shut-ins, do meals on wheels, clean the church, do the funeral lunches, etc. People take these services for granted and I don't think many realize how many of these things would completely fall apart without the volunteer work of home women with older children.

Great discussion about complementarity in parenting. In my marriage/family, I am the one who is less anxious and risk-averse while my husband is more anxious and risk-averse, so some of these interactions play out differently. (I am not doing horseplay with the kids, but I don’t freak out about them climbing and whatnot.) so I maybe need the reminder more often to let my husband be strict with the kids in his own way as a disciplinarian, since I don’t have the practice in being patient and tolerant of his more dangerous fun dealings with them!
