This has become a bigger movement nowadays, with microschooling and shared homeschooling/unschooling. Your suggestion was ahead of the curve 10 years ago :-)
Homeschooling has burgeoned! So many more opportunities to make friends! I met a mom at a library event and had a hunch she was interested in the topic. I just asked her if she'd thought of homeschooling her child and she eagerly responded. Nothing easier than to invite her over for tea, and so began a good friendship.
