Great discussion Phil and Leila! Yes, the debate moderators, like one of the debate participants, are complete knuckleheads. And yes they accused Vance of man-splaining. But what’s worse is they ASSUMED his gender in their accusation of “man-splaining!” :) how dare they!
Leila and Phil, thank you for sharing your perspectives on the debate. I greatly admire Vance, though I do wish he could speak plainly about the evil nature of abortion. I know, though, that the culture has regressed after a very skillful and relentless campaign by the Left to obfuscate reality and to defang the grotesque practice of killing children in the womb. I also agree with Vance that Republicans (not pro-life Christians on the front lines) have failed to engage with people who resort to abortion and that we must now rebuild trust. All true. As a Catholic, however, I have a much bigger "beef" with the Church - in particular at the local level - and her unwillingness to address abortion and other issues such as transgenderism head on.
I live in NY and we are voting on a referendum called Prop 1 (or the ERA). If passed, it will permanently enshrine abortion as right in our state's constitution and allow it for any reason at any time. Further, religious or conscience objections will be greatly minimized and in essence require people of faith to participate in this act against their will. Children could also consent to radical medical treatment including surgeries in their pursuit of "gender affirming" care without the knowledge or permission of parents. Our bishops have been largely silent in the run up to this election and have just started to make noise in diocesan newspapers and with bulletin inserts. But it is too little, too late. Priests rarely, if ever, address the issues from the pulpit. Further, the conduct of the Church (as seen in too many of her bishops and too many of her priests during Covid) reveals an underlying predisposition to avoid controversy even at the risk of failing to teach the faithful. I know this situation has been a long time in the making and that the Church forfeited her moral voice in the fallout of the sex abuse crisis, but the faithful who still hold to the teachings of the Church and try to live them out and pass them on are left alone on the battlefield without a leader and worse, ridiculed or shamed by said absent leaders.
Yes the abortion issue especially hurts my heart as well. Hope your granddaughter recovers from her bug trauma, lol. As a new subscriber, I am delighted to hear intelligent, respectful, moral discussions! Our world needs more of this.
I know abortion, taking the life of an innocent person, is the greater evil, but I've recently been thinking about how the Church and maybe even the pro-life movement should be making a much greater racket about the evil of contraception. Even if it isn't as grave, it still is grave and abortion really is downstream of contraception and the contraceptive mentality. The Church and its leaders do speak out against abortion a lot, but not at all about contraception. When even only 27% of Catholics who attend Mass weekly think using contraceptives is morally wrong (according to Pew). Just been feeling perplexed by the silence on the issue or why it's not discussed hand in hand with abortion, at least from the Church. Obviously it's a nonstarter for a politician such as Vance who has a hard enough time with abortion, but if we are playing the long game of changing hearts and minds our politicians need the support of the Church speaking loudly against contraception and divorce and extramarital relations and the other things that lead to the acceptance of abortion broadly.
In addition, our clergy and professional Catholic expert class (who really run things in the dioceses) have no clue about the abortafacient aspect of the forms of birth control that actually work. And they are naive about how contraceptive failure in the modern mind is a quick funnel to abortion.
They are wedded to NFP as a panacea -- and never mind actually teaching that having children is a blessing in marriage!
Would the Lawlers ever do a Q and A podcast episode?
Yes!

Totally agree.
It's shameful. Deeply shameful.

Thank you! Yes, she's perfectly fine haha...
